Desert Psalm
He made it all.
Though the earth upends and
its people wander,
Though its people revolt and
truth slips from memory,
He stands.
He stands as Light
Light that shines on the truth,
Light that calls to the lost
and is a beacon to the wanderer.
He reminds His people that
He made it all:
The hummingbird that dances in the air,
The bear that prowls at night to feed her cubs
seeking their provision,
The breeze that sweeps
the scent of jasmine to the imprisoned,
and the fierce haboob that makes way
for the cleansing rains of justice.
He made the heart that is capable
of laughter that rolls down in tears,
and the heart that is capable of grief
beyond strength.
He made the hearts and minds
the arms and eyes of all peoples
and in them it was He who set
a flame of desire for Himself.
With love and gentleness,
justice and power,
it was He who made it all.
